What county am I in?

Your county is one click away: press the button and let your browser share your location.

No location? Type a ZIP code, town or address

A street address goes to the Census geocoder to find its ZIP code; a ZIP code or town is answered from this site's own data. Nothing you type is stored.

How it works

Counties are drawn by states, ZIP codes by the Postal Service, and the two do not line up. This page asks your browser where you are, finds the ZIP code area that point falls inside (the Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, the same boundaries drawn on every map on this site), and reads the county from the Census Bureau's crosswalk of ZIP code areas to counties.

Most of the time that settles it: 23,605 of the 33,791 ZIP code areas lie in a single county. The other 10,186 straddle a county line; for those the answer names the county most of the area lies in and lists the others with their shares. The answer links to the county's page, with every ZIP code and town in it.

Also from the same lookup: your ZIP code, your area code and your time zone.

Counties by state

Every state's page lists its counties, each with its ZIP codes, towns and area codes.

Questions

How does this find my county?

Your browser tells the page where you are, from GPS on a phone or from nearby Wi-Fi networks on a laptop. The page finds the ZIP code area that point is inside, using the Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Area boundaries, and reads its county from the Census Bureau's crosswalk of ZIP code areas to counties.

Can a ZIP code be in two counties?

Yes. 10,186 of the 33,791 ZIP code areas (about 30%) reach into more than one county, because mail routes follow roads, not county lines. When yours does, the page names the county most of the area lies in, gives the share of each, and says that near the line the other county can be right.

What county is my address in?

Type the street address into the box under the answer. It goes to the Census geocoder, which finds its ZIP code, and the county comes from that ZIP code area. For a house right on a county line, the county's property records or tax bill are the final word.

Do you store my location?

No. Your coordinates are sent once, inside the request rather than in its address, to look up the ZIP code areas around you, and they are neither logged nor kept.

What counts as a county?

The Census Bureau's county equivalents: counties in 48 states, parishes in Louisiana, boroughs and census areas in Alaska, independent cities in Virginia and three other states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico's municipios and their equivalents in the island territories: 3,219 with ZIP codes in all.
