The underlying data

Most of this dataset is United States federal government work and is in the public domain. Two components are not, and their terms travel with any copy you make:

  • GeoNames place names and coordinates, licensed CC BY 4.0. Attribution to GeoNames is required.
  • Time zone boundaries derived from OpenStreetMap through timezone-boundary-builder, licensed ODbL 1.0. The timezone column is a derived value; redistributing it carries ODbL obligations.

The free ZIP code database

The free ZIP code database (CSV, JSON and SQLite at /download) is licensed CC BY 4.0: use it, redistribute it and build products on it, commercially or not, with credit to zipcodes.pro. It leaves out the time zone column so that no ODbL terms apply.

This site's compilation

The arrangement, derived columns and documentation are ours. Free-tier API responses and single-row downloads may be used freely with attribution to zipcodes.pro. Bulk redistribution of the dataset inside a product you ship to your own customers requires the redistribution licence on the data page.
