What area code am I in?
Press the button and let your browser share your location to see the area code for where you are.
The red pin is the spot being looked up; the shaded area is the ZIP code area it falls inside, which the answer above is read from. Click the map to look up another spot.
No location? Type a ZIP code, town or address
A street address goes to the Census geocoder to find its ZIP code; a ZIP code or town is answered from this site's own data. Nothing you type is stored.
How it works
Area codes are drawn around telephone exchanges, which phone companies call rate centres, not around ZIP codes or counties. This page asks your browser where you are, finds the ZIP code area that point falls inside and the town it belongs to, and reads that town's area codes from the rate-centre records of the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA). The codes holding the most numbers come first.
The United States has 378 geographic area codes. 264 of them are overlays, sharing their ground with one or two other codes, so in much of the country "my area code" has more than one right answer: the page names them all and links each code's page, with where it is, its overlays, the year it started and which kinds of carrier hold its numbers.
Also from the same lookup: your ZIP code, your county and your time zone. Every code is listed on the area code index.

Questions
How does this find my area code?
Your browser tells the page where you are. The page finds the ZIP code area that point is inside and the town it belongs to, then reads the area codes of that town's telephone exchanges from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator's rate-centre records.
Why does my phone number have a different area code?
A mobile number keeps its area code when its owner moves, and people keep numbers for decades, so many phones in any town carry a code from somewhere else. This page answers which area code a new local number here would get.
Why are there two or three area codes for one place?
When an area runs out of numbers, a new code is laid over the same ground instead of splitting it: an overlay. 264 of the 378 US geographic area codes share their ground with another code this way. A new number there can get any of them, and every local call needs all ten digits.
Can I find the area code for an address or ZIP code?
Yes: type a ZIP code, a town, or a street address into the box under the answer. A street address goes to the Census geocoder to find its ZIP code; a ZIP code or a town is answered from this site's own data.
Do you store my location?
No. Your coordinates are sent once, inside the request rather than in its address, to look up the ZIP code areas around you, and they are neither logged nor kept.
